Technical Names fo the Degrees of the Scale with Sharon Bill

This lesson is an additional lesson to support your work in your study for Music Theory Grades. Each step (or degree) of the scale is given a technical name. Although it is relatively easy to memorise these names it is much more interesting if we delve a little deeper into why these names represent each degree of the scale. It’s a fascinating topic and it makes it so much easier to remember the names if we understand what each term means. Let’s take a closer look!

This lesson is an additional lesson to support your work in your study for Music Theory Grades. The topic of Intervals can be a little tricky, but it it so interesting! With a little explanation and practice it will soon become easy!

Intervals, or the distance between two notes can easily be explained by steps, or degrees. However, we can then further explain this distance by considering chromatic alterations. It’s a fascinating topic with some aspects dating back as far as Medieval music. Let’s take a closer look at the subject of Intervals.

The Circle of Fifths A Closer Look on Patreon with Sharon Bill

The Circle of Fifths A Closer Look with Sharon Bill

This lesson is an additional lesson to support your work in your study for Music Theory Grades. You can work the formula as far as you need - going only to the number of sharps and flats required, or you can work through all the keys and see it travel ‘full circle’. With a little bit of practice it’s easy!

The Circle of Fifths is a simple way of making sure you have all the correct key signatures for every major and minor key. It is also a system for making sure that you have all the correct related major and minor key pairings. If you get used to sketching out the circle of fifths it saves so much time and confusion, thinking about which key signature you should be thinking about. With a little practice you can have all the knowledge that you need at your fingertips, whether you’re dealing with scales, intervals or triads. It’s like a magic formula!
